Good Technology Selected by R+V Insurance to Provide Secure Access to Exchange Mailbox on Private Smartphones

  • R+V chooses Good for its data security combined with ease of maintenance for employees’ smartphones
  • Cost and time savings for upgrades as well as fewer support calls

Mannheim/FfM and Wiesbaden Germany — Oct 08, 2012 Good Technology, the leader in secure enterprise mobility solutions, today announced that R+V Versicherung, a general insurance company based in Wiesbaden, Germany, has selected the Good for Enterprise™ solution to simplify the integration of employees’ own mobile devices with corporate email and other systems. The solution enables the inside sales force, which is not equipped with company-standard devices – to easily synchronize their work email as well their contacts and appointments on their own smartphones. The IT department also benefits from the solution in that it is no longer necessary to undertake time-consuming and costly support and administration for Outlook synchronization on the employees’ personal phones.

R+V Versicherung had previously allowed inside sales staff to synchronize their contacts and appointments with their personal device by installing the relevant software on each of the desktops – primarily for iOS and Android. However, email was excluded from the synchronization process for security reasons. R+V’s IT staff also found that service and support for the desktop software was becoming increasingly burdensome and costly, especially when they needed to install patches or updates. “Another issue was that a physical connection between the device and the desktop shouldn’t be necessary in this day and age,” says Michael Jostock, IT Architect in the Basic System Infrastructure department at R+V Versicherung. “We wanted a technology that would be accepted by users while being secure, future-proof and easy to manage.”

As with many companies implementing a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) strategy, the challenge for R+V was determining the best way to ensure a watertight separation of personal and company data while also preventing unauthorized access to, or downloading of, corporate information. It also wanted to avoid having to provide support for personal devices. IT staff tested a number of different solutions and selected Good Technology’s Good for Enterprises solution for its robust security, simplified architecture, ease of implementation, and intuitive user interface. R+V is running two Good servers – one active and the other to provide redundancy if any issues arise on the first server.

“We were very impressed by the implementation process – barely two hours went by between inserting the installation DVD and hooking up the first iPhones to the network. That’s an IT administrator’s dream!” comments Daniel Simon, product manager for the Good solution at R+V. The company now only needs to run one solution for all smartphones instead of a locally-installed suite on every desktop. Additionally, feedback from R+V employees has been very positive and support calls have been cut by 20 per cent per month with Good for Enterprise as compared to the previous solution.

“R+V’s deployment of Good for Enterprise is a great example of how BYOD can be a win-win for all parts of a business—turning IT into an innovation driver, offering employees choice and helping reduce costs and inefficiencies,” notes Florian Bienvenu, Vice President Central & Southern EMEA at Good Technology. “R+V needed top-notch security combined with ease of use and simple maintenance and they were able to find all of that with Good while also reducing support costs.”

At R+V, the new lifecycle for laptops and desktops begins in 2013 and the company is already planning to extend the use of Good for Enterprise to replace all remaining cable-based synchronization processes.
