According to "Good Technology’s 2nd Annual State of BYOD Report", 76 percent of enterprises with more than 2,000 employees have programs in place, and the total is expected to reach 88 percent this year. However, in half the companies with BYOD programs, employees pay for devices and supporting services, such as cellular data for cell phones, tablets and some laptops. You want a new laptop, or to use a smartphone or tablet -- "bring your own" is the new trend. The devices are cheaper to manage than to buy.

"We can't afford to delete things of a personal nature or impede their ability to use their personal asset," he says.
Q&A: Good Technology CTO, Nicko van Someren
Date:
November 19, 2012
Publication: CIO Australia
What’s your advice to CIOs when managing MDM and bring-your-own-device (BYOD) programs?
CIOs should be asking what is the data that people need to access and what is going to be valuable for people to have access to- is it just email, document editing and file depositories or do we need access to business intelligence [BI] systems and customer relationship management [CRM] systems?
The CIO needs to look for applications that give them access to critical data in ways that set the policy about who gets access to that information, under what circumstances do they get access and what they can do with the data once it gets to the mobile device.

Good Claims Sovereignty Over Mobile Security
Date:
November 16, 2012
Publication: Information Week Blog
Good Technology's bombshell announcement Wednesday that it is suing competitors MobileIron and AirWatch for patent infringement probably has everyone in the mobile security and management business calling their lawyers. If nothing else, the move is "good" for intellectual property attorneys.
I've been talking to people in the business and the consensus is that Good could really cause a great deal of disorder, depending on what it's up to. Of course it is seeking injunctions against the sale of the allegedly infringing products, but it's basically just a shakedown for licensing fees. A rich ecosystem of mobile security competitors is probably just fine with Good as long as all those competitors are paying Good's cut. A little bit of history might be in order here: Many might think that the mobile industry sprang from Steve Jobs' mind in 2007 with the release of the iPhone, but much of the basic technology was in use long before and Good's antecedents were there. Visto Corporation, the main corporate ancestor of Good Technology, was writing software for corporate mobile users back in the mid-90's. Back then "mobile" meant using a notebook computer on the road, and Visto's software was browser-based.

Good sues AirWatch, MobileIron for patent infringement

Providers of BYOD solutions in legal stoush.
Mobile Device Management provider Good Technology has filed suit against two competitors, MobileIron and AirWatch, for patent infringement in a Californian federal court.
Good Technology issued a statement earlier today, describing the lawsuits as the "next front of smartphone wars". The company will not disclose how much in monetary damages it is seeking from its two competitors.Speaking to iTnews from Sydney, Good Technology’s senior vice president of global sales Brian Carr said the company came to feel its patents had been infringed upon whilst discussing competitive solutions with customers. He called the alleged infringements “blatant” and rejected any assertion Good Technology may be labelled a "patent troll."
“Good Technology has been innovating since 1996 and we have been granted 75 patents since then,” Carr said. “We have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in research and development.”
